For portraits the 24-70 is better on either FX or DX the 17-55mm is DX only. Well Im getting ready to drop money on one of these.

There were less surprises than I thought but. It wont be quite as sharp as the 24-70 on a D500 bur it will have the advantages of VR and a 24mm equivlanet wide end. I would go with the 17-55 if you have no intention of going FX. Ive used the 17-55 and its a wonderful lens on DX but I would expect the 24-70 to perform even better as its a top of the line lens and is much newer. Well Im getting ready to drop money on one of these.

Well I already own a Nikon D700 with the 24-70mm f28 lens so Nikon lent me the D300 and the 17-55mm lens combo to do the evaluating. The 17-5528 DX is a very sharp lens on DX. With those caveats the Nikon 17-55mm f28 AF-S is very very sharp on a 16 MP DX camera. Warehouse Express asked me to check out the differences between the Nikon rivals and report back.
